What is Nuad Thai?
Nuad Thai is traditional Thai massage: a full body practice of pressing, stretching, and rocking, done with hands, thumbs, elbows, knees, and feet. You stay fully dressed and no oil is used. The therapist works along the body's energy lines, called sen, and moves you through assisted stretches that some people describe as yoga someone else does for you.
Why is Nuad Thai on the UNESCO list?
UNESCO inscribed Nuad Thai on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2019. The listing recognizes it as living knowledge, passed from teacher to student for generations and still part of everyday Thai life, from village healers to hospital wellness programs. How old is Thai massage?
The tradition reaches back many centuries. Thai teaching honors Jivaka, a physician said to have treated the Buddha's community around 2,500 years ago, as the father of the craft. What is certain history: the knowledge was collected and preserved in Thai temples, most famously at Wat Pho in Bangkok, where stone carvings and inscriptions from the 1800s still teach the positions and pressure points.
