Thai Massage in Chiang Mai: A Guide
Thai massage in Chiang Mai is everywhere. A shop on every soi in the Old City, a spa in every big hotel, and therapists who trained here first. This guide covers what Thai massage is and the types in the city. Then what it costs by kind of place, where to get it by area, and how to have one in your room.
What Thai Massage Is, and Why Chiang Mai
Thai massage, nuad thai, is pressing and stretching. No oil, clothes on. The therapist uses palms, thumbs, elbows and feet along the lines of the body, and folds you into stretches you would not do alone. An hour leaves the legs and hips loose and the head quiet.
Chiang Mai is the north's massage town. The Lanna tradition has its own moves and the city holds several massage schools. Many therapists who work in Bangkok or on the islands learned here first. The result is a lot of good hands per square kilometre, and prices that stay low.
Types of Thai Massage in Chiang Mai
- Traditional Thai massage: the full body version, 60 to 120 minutes. Shops use a mat; at your hotel it happens on your bed. The default everywhere and the one we bring to your room.
- Thai foot massage: reflexology on the feet and lower legs, seated. The thirty minute break between temples, and an add on at home.
- Thai massage with herbal compress: a steamed cloth ball of herbs pressed along the body after the stretches. A spa item, slower and warmer.
- Thai oil massage: Thai style pressure with oil, fewer stretches, undressed to underwear. Closer to an oil massage than to nuad thai.
- Tok sen: the northern one. A wooden hammer and peg tap along the body lines. Found in a few Old City shops and courses, not a room service.

| Spa | from about 1,000 THB | private room, herbal compress on the menu, booking needed on weekends |

Where to Get Thai Massage in Chiang Mai
- Old City: the densest run of Thai massage shops in the country, inside the moat. Walk in after the temples. Guesthouse stays book to the room with a word at the desk.
- Nimman: shops on the sois, spas in the malls, and condo bookings after a day in a cafe.
- Night Bazaar: the big hotels on Chang Klan Road, each with a spa. A room booking after the market skips the spa price.
- Riverside: resort spas by the Ping at the top of the range, room bookings as the alternative.
Areas, prices and the therapists for the whole city sit on the Chiang Mai page.

Before Your First Thai Massage
- Wear loose clothes. Shops hand you a pair of fisherman pants. At home, anything you can stretch in.
- Say the pressure in the first minute. Gentle, medium or strong. It changes on the spot.
- Mention injuries. A bad knee, a sore back, a recent flight. The therapist works around it.
- After a trek: Thai for tight legs and hips, deep tissue if one spot hurts. The trek post covers what to book after Doi Suthep.
