Thai Massage Etiquette: What to Expect (First Timers)

First massage in Thailand and slightly nervous about doing something wrong? Relax. Thai massage culture is warm, practical, and very used to first timers. Nobody expects you to know the customs. Still, knowing a few makes the hour easier, so here is the short version of everything people quietly worry about.

Traditional Thai massage session, guest fully dressed as Thai massage etiquette expects

Should you shower before a massage?

Yes, a quick shower before the session is the polite move, especially in Bangkok heat. It is not a strict rule and nobody will say anything, but it is appreciated, and you will be more relaxed too. With an outcall massage this is easy: you are home, shower minutes before the knock on the door.

After an oil massage, most guests shower after the therapist leaves. Or skip it, sleep oiled, and shower in the morning. Both are normal.

Do you take your clothes off for a Thai massage?

No. For a traditional Thai massage you stay dressed. You wear loose, comfortable clothes and the therapist works through them. No oil is used, so shorts and a t-shirt work perfectly. For oil based massages you undress to your comfort level, usually down to underwear, and you are covered with a towel the whole time except the area being worked on.

Wear or bring whatever makes you comfortable. Nobody will rush you, and the therapist steps away or turns around while you get settled.

Can you ask for softer or stronger pressure?

Yes, always, and you should. Say "soft please" or "stronger please" at any point, as many times as you want. Thai therapists take zero offense at pressure requests; adjusting is a normal part of the work. Suffering in silence through pressure you hate is the one real etiquette mistake, because the therapist would much rather adjust than hurt you.

Same for pain: real Thai massage can be intense, but sharp pain is never the goal. Say something immediately.

Should you talk during the massage?

Follow your own preference. Some guests chat, most drift somewhere between awake and asleep, and your therapist will follow your lead. Falling asleep is not rude, it is a compliment. Snoring is forgiven.

The only talking that matters is feedback: pressure, pain, cold, anything that affects your comfort. That is never an interruption.

Do you tip a massage therapist in Thailand?

Tipping is appreciated but not required. There is no fixed rule. If the session was good, 100-300 baht is a common range for guests who want to tip, handed directly to the therapist with thanks. A warm review naming her helps her just as much: reviews bring her bookings.

What is never expected: apologizing for your body, your flexibility, or needing the toilet mid session. Therapists have seen everything. Ask for what you need.

Small customs worth knowing

Two Thai habits worth matching. First, feet: pointing your feet at someone's head is impolite in Thai culture, so just follow the therapist's positioning, she will arrange you correctly without a word. Second, the wai, the small bow with palms together that many therapists give when arriving or leaving: you can return it or simply smile and thank her, both are fine.

That is the whole etiquette. Book a session, say what you need, enjoy the hour. If you want the full picture of a session in your own room, our what to expect guide covers the practical side.
